Patterns in Mathematics

Dear Parents/Guardians;
For the next few weeks, your child will be exploring patterns and methods of organizing and displaying information about patterns. Students already understand how to recognize, extend, and create basic patterns. They will now apply their understanding of patterns to other concepts such as time, money, multiplication and division. As students work through this chapter, they will begin to see the connection of the concepts and skills taught in this chapter to other concepts and skills. The goal will be for your child to identify, extend, create and solve problems that use patterns. They will also be asked to use different organizational methods to display their information, such as tables, charts, and spreadsheets.
You may want to visit www.mathk8.nelson.com and follow the links to Nelson mathematics, Chapter 1 for more suggestions to help your child learn mathematics and for books that relate children's literature to patterns. Also check the site for links to other Web sites that provide online tutorials, math problems, and brainteasers.

Lifeline Introduction Letter

Dear Parents,

The 2009/2010 school year has begun and it will be a busy one once again. As educators we try to provide a safe, productive, and respectful environment for our students. It s our hope that students will learn to make appropriate choices, have a responsible, positive attitude towards learning and demonstrate respect towards the environment as a whole. We believe that every student has the potential to excel and demonstrate academic excellence!

Here at Wasse Abin Pontiac, we are in the process of setting in place a new program for those students who find themselves challenged by the demands of the curriculum. The program is called Life Line and is geared for those who need that extra assistance in either math or language arts. In order for this new and exciting program to be successful, we need each student, parent, and teacher to sign a contract agreeing to participate in this program should your child require assistance.

Attached is the Life Line contract. Signatures are required from each student and parent, as well as the teacher. Signed contracts are to be returned to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding this program or any other questions, please feel free to contact you child’s teacher at 859-3133 and they will be happy to answer your questions.

Miigwetch,

Grade 5 and 6 teachers.
